Every prepper knows that having the right firepower around when things go south is paramount to survival.

Which are the best guns for your prepping?

The problem is that many preppers don’t put any thought in to WHAT kind of firepower will actually be useful in a hostile world.  Just walking into a gun store and buying the next best thing isn’t going to get you very far when it comes to surviving in a post-disaster environment.

There are a few weapons that are must-haves for any prepper that is counting on surviving.

We’ll start with the small stuff.

How is your short-range game?

Every prepper should have a good short-range weapon.  Depending on the laws where you reside, your best option is either going to be a shotgun or a pistol.  If you can legally own a handgun then you probably should consider owning a 9mm Glock.  Glocks are known for their reliability and they rarely jam.

The 9mm is just large enough to stop any threat that you may face, but it also is small enough to allow for control.  If you aren’t allowed to own handguns where you live, then your next best bet is a shotgun.  Many preppers will balk at owning a shotgun because of its bulkiness and short range, but a shotgun is very effective at short range.

It can also be modified into a pistol grip room sweeper if the laws where you live allow pistol grip modifications.  The next question when it comes to an effective shotgun is a the gauge.  The twelve gauge is your best bet.  The power of the twelve gauge is unbridled and it can knock down doors if you need it to because remember in a post-disaster environment you never know when you might need to get through a locked door.  Guns can be used not only as weapons, but as tools for survival.

The next type of gun that every prepper should have is a good long-range bolt-action rifle.

The trusty old bolt-action rifle

You are probably thinking to yourself, “A bolt action rifle?

What the hell am I going to do with a bolt action rifle when the shit hits the fan?

Having a trusty bolt-action rifle around may not help you in the initial hours following a disaster or emergency situation, but it will definitely benefit you in the long run.  The benefit of having a bolt-action rifle around lies in the simplicity of the upper receiver.

The action on a bolt-action rifle is incredibly simple, and its simplicity makes it easy to repair in the field.  Assault rifles and other “bad ass” looking rifles tend to be complicated and very hard to repair without expensive tools.  By having a bolt action around you are ensuring your ability to arm yourself in not only the short term, but the long term as well.

The most common weapon on planet Earth

Every prepper should own at least one more weapon if they want to ensure their families survival when the shit hits the fan, and that is an assault rifle.  Your bolt action will always be there, but having a quality durable assault weapon is always beneficial.  All preppers have their favorite rifle, but the best assault weapon is by far the AK-47.

The Kalashnikov as it is properly known is the most common weapon on planet earth.  That makes finding parts and more importantly ammunition in a post-disaster world much easier.  Thinking past the initial few days after a disaster is very important.  You have to plan for you and your family’s long-term survival, and by selecting an AK-47 over other fancier assault rifles, you are doing your due diligence.  The durability, toughness, and simplicity of the AK is unmatched even to this day.

Many people have reported using them after dropping them in mud and water.  You can’t beat the AK when it comes to a reliable assault rifle to defend yourself, your family, and your property.

Having the right weaponry around when the shit hits the fan can be crucial, but it won’t guarantee your survival.  Preparing with the right guns and equipment means nothing if you don’t have the right mindset.  Remember survival is twenty percent preparation, and eighty percent mental toughness.
